Traumatic Brain Injuries In Alaska

Traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs, are dangerous. Unlike most injuries, those who suffer from TBIs can battle symptoms for the rest of their lives. The extent of damage associated with these injuries has received increased scrutiny in the media, partly due to former professional football players filing a lawsuit against the National Football League (NFL) for downplaying the negative impact of TBIs.

The American Academy of Neurology is also taking a closer look at the damage caused by these injuries. The professional organization recently released new guidelines to those who evaluate and manage athletes advising them to “immediately remove” athletes from play if a TBI is suspected.

Unfortunately, these negative impacts affect more than just professional football players. These brain injuries, caused by a bump or blow to the head, often result from car accidents and falls.

Common signs and symptoms of a TBI

There are many signs and symptoms associated with a TBI, but experts with Mayo Clinic note some of the more common include:

  • Confusion
  • Headache and sensitivity to changes in light and sound
  • Changes in balance and dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Changes in speech and problems with memory

Symptoms of a TBI are both physical and psychological. When concerned a child may suffer from a TBI any changes in eating, sleep habits or persistent crying may signal the presence of an injury.

Long lasting impact of a TBI

Research supported by The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) indicates that a TBI does not just result in negative symptoms immediately after an accident. Those who suffer from these injuries can experience symptoms for months and years after the injury and victims of severe TBIs can face serious injuries and death.

TBIs also increase the risk of developing degenerative diseases later in life. These diseases include Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and dementia.

Alaska’s high rate of TBIs

Alaska has one of the highest rates of TBIs in the nation. In fact, The Department of Health and Social Services recently noted that the rate of TBIs in Alaska is 28 percent higher than the rest of the nation. Top causes within Alaska include car accidents, falls and use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs).

If an injury is the result of another’s negligence or reckless behavior, compensation may be available to help cover the cost of medical and rehabilitative expenses.
